Join the Movement is a Queensland Government campaign that aims to get women and girls moving.

Encouraging lifelong participation in sport and active recreation is vital to the overall health and wellbeing of Queensland’s women and girls. Plus, it’s fun!

It is time to Join the Movement, change the perception of exercise and make physical activity inviting, exciting, energising and inclusive with all the benefits that come along with it.

There are a myriad of physical, psychological and social gains that leading an active lifestyle provides. However, as surprising as it sounds, many Queensland women and girls are still missing out on the benefits of participation.

Sport and active recreation is embedded within Queensland’s culture, Join the Movement intends to build on that culture and encourage women and girls to make a pledge to reassess their priorities, make a change and make room for physical activity in their lives.

After all, there is a sport or activity out there to suit everyone regardless of interests, abilities, responsibilities, ethnicity, socio-economic status or location. With that in mind, the goal is to see an increase in participation, having better access to, leading and celebrating sport and active recreation across their lifespan.

Recognising the importance of participation in sport and active recreation to women’s and girls’ lives, the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing, through Sport and Recreation Services, established the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Women and Girls in Sport and Recreation in March 2013.

The Advisory Committee was established to develop evidence-based recommendations to guide the government in its quest to increase and enhance women’s and girls’ lifelong participation in sport and active recreation.  Comprising five experts in the fields of sport, recreation and physical activity, the committee released Start Playing Stay Playing: A plan to increase and enhance sport and active recreation opportunities for women and girls, which outlined major recommendations and strategies to increase participation levels in women and girls

These recommendations led to the development of the Join the Movement promotional campaign. Join the Movement is a campaign designed to encourage and inspire Queensland women to be more active. Our campaign is made for Queenslanders by Queenslanders with every woman involved volunteering to be a part of the movement.
